A special newswire from The World Federation

PRESS RELEASE:  WF launches HAITI EARTHQUAKE RELIEF FUND in aid of quake victims
'The generous person is close to Allah, close to people and close to Paradise.'
The Holy Prophet (S)
On Tuesday 12 January 2010 at 4:53pm, a 7.0 magnitude earthquake rocked southern Haiti just when people were preparing to leave work to go home to their families. Sadly, thousands of these individuals will never see their loved ones again as family members and friends are missing in the rubble and 50,000 to 100,000 people are already feared dead.
The quake's epicentre hit just 10 miles west of Porte-au-Prince, Haiti's capital where the population is about 2 million. 33 aftershocks ranging in magnitude from 4.2 to 5.9 continued to rock the island after the initial shake.
UN and Red Cross workers report that approximately 60 to 80 percent of the buildings in Port-au-Prince were destroyed or badly damaged. About 3 million people are left homeless and injured and in need of emergency aid. Many of the Haitians are living on sidewalks or in parks and plazas.  As for those who have died, local radio stations are broadcasting messages for people to put their dead out in the street to be picked up by trucks and taken to a mass grave. Relief workers warn the death toll will rise quickly if tens of thousands of injured do not get first aid in soon.
With the country's airports and water ports damaged by the quake, aid is slowly makings its way to the victims who have not had food or water since Tuesday's devastating earthquake; worries are growing about what could happen in the next few days if aid does not get in their hands quickly.
ABOUT HAITI
- Located between Cuba and Puerto Rico in the Caribbean
- Population is nearly 10,000,000 people
- About 5,000 Muslims live in Haiti
- Official language is French
- Capital is Port-au-Prince
- Haiti is one of poorest countries in the Western Hemisphere
- 80% of the population lives below the poverty line
- Most Haitians live on less than $2 a day
- More than two-thirds of the labour force do not have formal employment
- Haiti is one of the most densely populated and least developed countries in the Western Hemisphere
HAITI EARTHQUAKE RELIEF FUND
The World Federation in partnership with The Africa Federation, the Council of European Jamaats and NASIMCO is launching the Haiti Earthquake Relief Fund. Haiti is living a great humanitarian crisis and The World Federation is appealing to all Shia Muslim communities around the world to donate generously.

The World Federation is working on proposals which focus its relief efforts in Haiti on the medium to long term aid.  Immediate assistance for basic provisions such as food, water, clothing and shelter is already being provided by many Governmental and charitable organizations.  Once these proposals are finalized, we will share them with the rest of the community through our newswire and website.
The World Federation is deeply distraught and concerned about the devastation and loss of lives as a result of the 7.0 magnitude earthquake. In this month of Muharram in which Imam Husayn (AS), sacrificed everything he had to champion the rights of humanity, let us unite to bring respite to the people of Haiti.

An experience of a lifetime - Madinah Al-Ilm and Bab Al-Ilm Summer Camps now underway

bab diaries

Boys' Daily Diaries

Girls' Daily Diaires

Each year, the Madinah al-Ilm and Bab al-Ilm Summer Courses are organised by The World Federation of KSIMC for boys and girls between 14-24 years of age. The participants spend three weeks in an engaging spiritual, academic and cultural experience. This course has proved to be a life changing experience for many of the youths that have attended over the past 6 years.

Similar to previous years, the 7th Madinah al-Ilm and Bab Al-Ilm summer course is currently underway is held in Qum, Iran.    Students from all over the world apply to attend the camps, however only a few are chosen to participate each year.

The camps are organised through several hours of planning, budgeting, and preparations, including recruitment of volunteers and teachers, booking of venues, flights etc.  Mentors are also recruited and trained prior to leaving for the camps to assist with the students Islamic development.

This year's academic programme includes lessons in Aqaid, Qur'anic principles, workshops on Usool and Fiqh among other discussions and sessions.  As part of  the cultural programme students will be visiting the sites of the Holy City of Mashad and Qum including visiting the resting places of Imam Al-Ridha (as) and Sayyida Fatima Masooma (sa).

The students and mentors have been keeping daily diaries of their experiences.  Mehdi Abdulla of London, UK writes:

'In the evening, we had the honor of meeting with a great spiritual teacher, Sheikh Amini. The Sheikh talked about how to get close to Allah and how important it is to feel and believe in His presence wherever you are. Sheikh then went on to narrate an incident he was told by Ayatollah Behjat in which Ayatollah Behjat's teacher Allamah Kadhi Tabatabai said "If we go to jannah and there is no salah there, what will we do?" This epitomizes the hadith which says that salah is the me'raj of a mu'min.

How is this relevant to us? The answer to that could possibly lie in contemplating on the following questions. How many of us actually pray in a way in such a way that we to ascend to Allah (swt) everytime we pray? How many of us feel as though our namaaz is just words and actions and neglect it to the extent that we would rather watch TV or go out with friends or play football at the time of prayers?  How many think that I'll pray salah quickly today because the world cup final is on today and I have to watch it otherwise I won't have anything to talk to my friends about? How many actually bother to understand what we are reciting during salah and why we are reciting them?  As Muslims we need to contemplate on these basic questions and address them appropriately so that we can begin to reap the benefits of salah mentally, physically and spiritually, but most importantly so that we can get closer to Our Lord and Creator.'
